Have you been receiving phone calls from the IRS? There have been a number of clients who have received phone calls from somebody claiming to be the IRS however these are scams that you should be aware of. Please do not provide payment information to these individuals.
The IRS released a list of things they will not do that have been a part of the scam:
- The IRS will not call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.
- The IRS will not demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to questions or appeal the amount they say you owe.
- The IRS will not require you to use specific payment methods.
- The IRS will not ask for a credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
- The IRS will not threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
If you should receive one of these calls first you should determine if you do owe taxes or if there is a chance that you owe taxes.
The quickest way to determine this is to contact your preparer. That person can help you not only determine if you owe but can give you the options of how to pay so that you know your money is going where it should. If you want to report the call as a scam, fill out the information on Treasury’s website.
Please keep in mind the IRS will not send out emails, texts, or call an individual or business to demand payment. A letter is always sent to the entity explaining why they owe taxes and which form they owe taxes for.
